On last night’s episode of BBC Radio 3′s Jazz on 3, Boston-based guitarist/composer Eric Hofbauer spoke about his latest release, American Fear (Creative Nation Music), with eminent British jazz journalist John Fordham, and stayed on to play five tracks from the record live in studio.

Hofbauer’s 20-minute solo set included his unusual covers of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, Charlie Parker’s “Moose The Mooche” and Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher”, as well as the originals, “Bail Out Blues” and “American Wonder”.

His invitation to appear on the show came as a result of the response to host Jez Nelson playing “Hot For Teacher” on the May 31st episode while spotlighting American Fear as one of his favorite new releases.

“I thought it was great,” Fordham said. “I’ve never heard anyone play the guitar like that before. There’s so much going on in there and it’s quite extraordinary to listen to—a lot of tremendous energy and that real self-propelling rhythmic feel as if he had his own built-in rhythm section.”

The complete December 6th episode is available to stream online for six more days. Hofbauer’s segment closes the show and begins just after the 1:20 mark.
