Today is the official street date for Mettle (Playscape Recordings), veteran guitarist/composer Michael Musillami's sixth release with his flagship trio featuring bassist Joe Fonda and drummer George Schuller, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

Today is the official street date for Mettle (Playscape Recordings), veteran guitarist/composer Michael Musillami‘s sixth release with his flagship trio with bassist Joe Fonda and drummer George Schuller. The record, which also features special guests Russ Johnson (trumpet), Ned Rothenberg (alto saxophone and clarinet), Jeff Lederer (tenor saxophone and clarinet) and Matt Moran (vibraphone), is part of the celebration of the trio’s 10th anniversary as a working unit.

In his recent feature article, the Hartford Courant‘s Owen McNally calls the group “a superb, finely tuned unit, empathetic, swinging and dramatically expressive of emotions sweeping from joy to sadness.” He adds, “More impressive than longevity, however, is the trio’s remarkably tight, cohesive unity. This element goes hand-in-hand with the threesome’s free, open sense of exploration both as individuals and as a unit in which they constantly interact with one another.”

Mettle is a collection of all-new original material, including Musillami’s first extended suite, Summer Suite: Twenty Ten, featuring eight diverse movements based on experiences and reminiscences—both musical and personal—from last summer. The inspirations range from a volcano in Iceland to his newly shaved head to memories of his Grandfather to his daughter going to college to a family vacation spot on Cape Cod.

The three other pieces on the record have similarly autobiographical backstories. The first track, “Piana dei Greci”, takes its name from the small Sicilian village where all four of Musillami’s grandparents were born. “Blues For The Wounded Warrior” was written as a tribute to the Wounded Warrior Project, a favorite charity of Musillami’s that assists wounded soldiers. A comment from his wife, a couple of hooded sweatshirts and a short period of listening to Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur inspired the record’s final track, “Thuggish Mornings”.

Musillami and his Trio + 4 have already performed this music live around the Northeast and will hit the road this spring for a series of CD release dates at venues such as Firehouse 12 in New Haven. More details will be announced soon.

On April 10th, AUM Fidelity will release the Eri Yamamoto Trio's The Next Page, a collection of all-new original music inspired by subtle yet profound moments of natural beauty.

On April 10th, AUM Fidelity will release the Eri Yamamoto Trio’s third title for the label, The Next Page (AUM071). This collection of all-new original music further demonstrates New York-based pianist/composer Eri Yamamoto‘s gift for melodious songcraft as well as the intuitive rapport of her longstanding trio featuring bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi. It features 11 pieces presented in two half-hour sets, divided by a short break, mirroring the format of the group’s live performances at its decade-long weekly engagement at the historic Arthur’s Tavern in Greenwich Village.

“I feel that our music keeps growing,” Ms. Yamamoto writes in the liner notes, “and that we are turning the page to a new chapter of our adventure together.” Her latest compositions draw their inspiration from the experience of subtle yet profound moments, including a beautiful vista in the mountains of Ireland, the first leaves of spring in Central Park, the sparkle of the winter sky through her window, the youthful enthusiasm of her eight year-old nephew and the nuances of light and shade while traversing the streets of New York on a dark night.

“Eri Yamamoto’s pianism is quietly dignified and her approach to music making exudes introspection and beauty,” writes The New York City Jazz Record‘s Marc Medwin. “Each note seems sculpted out of the silence surrounding it.” Others have described the trio’s music as “beautifully telepathic and conversational” (Will Layman, PopMatters.com), “fresh and intriguing” (Joe Bendel, The Epoch Times) and “simple, clear and to the point, thereby achieving an earthy eloquence” (Glen Hall, Exclaim!). The BBC’s Bill Tilland adds, “Yamamoto has a lovely touch and an active musical imagination. Consequently, each piece shines with its own interior light.”

“She can be a sonic painter,” explains the Hartford Courant‘s Owen McNally in his recent feature article, “as she demonstrates on her album, Redwoods, where her evocative playing makes you experience the sound of silence and godlike majesty of the giant redwood trees in the Muir Woods near San Francisco. She blends soft-hued harmonies, luminous melodies and lyrical expression with the introspective spirit of pianist Keith Jarrett and the poetic resonance of the great English romantic poet, William Wordsworth. Besides her knack for poetic introspection, she can also swing with free, vibrant energy…propelled by crackling interaction with her trio mates.”

Thumbscrew, a new collective trio featuring guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, will perform at New York's Cornelia Street Café and Baltimore's The Windup Space in March.

Thumbscrew, a new collective trio featuring guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, will play its first two gigs at Cornelia Street Café in New York on March 11th and The Windup Space in Baltimore on March 14th. The group will perform all new music composed by each of its members.

The idea to work together followed a chance encounter last year in the rhythm section of one of Taylor Ho Bynum’s bands. “It was one of those situations where we instantly clicked,” Ms. Halvorson recalls, “and the three of us started talking about doing a project together right away. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what happens!”

She adds, “I have long admired bassist Michael’s playing, most notably in Tim Berne’s Bloodcount and on Am I Bothering You?, his ridiculously amazing solo bass record. In 2010, when I heard his release The Rub and Spare Change, I was blown away all over again. Tomas is one of my all time favorite drummers and a frequent collaborator. He is versatile, thoughtful, intense and extraordinarily deep in his approach.”

New Music USA's online publication NewMusicBox explores clarinetist/composer James Falzone's eclectic body of work in a new video feature, James Falzone—Music Through Other Lenses, featuring live performance footage and an exclusive interview.

Photo: Jeff Meacham

In its new profile, posted yesterday, New Music USA’s online publication NewMusicBox explores the breadth of Chicago-based clarinetist/composer James Falzone’s recent work, including his extended solo project Sighs Too Deep For Words, his Arabic-themed Allos Musica Trio and his working jazz quartet KLANG.

The eight-minute video, titled James Falzone—Music Through Other Lenses, includes live performance footage and an exclusive interview.

“James Falzone is not sitting back contentedly watching his star ascend,” writes contributor Devin Hurd in his accompanying article. “As an accomplished performer, composer, improviser, and educator, Falzone pursues a musical vision rooted in the middle ground between the fully notated world of conservatory-trained musicians and the improvisation-based energy of jazz and creative music. It is a territory he explores with an omnivorous appetite for musical influences and aesthetic directions, whether leading his quartet KLANG through a set of contemporary jazz compositions at a late night haunt, directing liturgical music with the Grace Chicago Consort, or composing for orchestra.”

He adds, “It’s that extra layer of consideration informed by experience that goes into creating music that gives the otherwise widely varied musical expressions of James Falzone its unifying quality. It’s what allows him to distill so many different influences into an aesthetic that is identifiably his own, pushing at the boundaries of what music is and might be.”

Falzone’s entire discography is now available digitally (in a variety of formats from MP3 to FLAC) through his label’s new Bandcamp site, including his nearly out of print debut, The Already and the Not Yet.

This February, pianist Myra Melford, bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Matt Wilson will celebrate the release of The Guest House (Enja/Yellowbird), their second recording as Trio M, with California performances at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla (2/2), the Jazz Bakery Series at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles (2/3) and Yoshi’s in San Francisco (2/6).

The record, which officially hits the streets earlier that week, features compositions by all three musicians, including pieces inspired by such diverse muses as the poetry of Rumi and Al-Jawahiri, the prose of Yvonne Vera, the comedy of Don Knotts and the music of Albert Ayler. Also included are selections written for the band’s 2010 collaboration with chef Paul Canales and a benefit concert for The Relay For Life, which celebrates lives affected by cancer.

“This is not your average piano-trio by a long shot,” declares the San Diego Reader‘s Robert Bush in his review of The Guest House. “Together, the trio manages to nail the traditional expectations while shattering the boundaries of convention. Beginning with the Melford-penned title track, there is an instant surge of joy in this music. The Guest House is terrific stuff, and the production-values are top notch all the way, from the crystalline sound to the superior artwork and graphics.”

Founded in early 2006, Trio M brings together three of the most respected veteran musicians in jazz and improvised music. The New York City Jazz Record‘s Laurence Donohue-Greene writes, “The exploratory Trio M…continues to turn out one mesmerizing set after another, revealing their deep empathy while equally balancing composition with improvisation. Each member is readily equipped to do anything at any given moment, from soloing to laying out to changing tempo, the three moving as one, always.”

Critics have called the group “always exploratory and collaborative” (Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen), “one of those rare units that can be both wildly creative and surprisingly user-friendly” (Alexander Varty, Georgia Straight) and “not only one of the most virtuosic playing today, but one of the most consistently engrossing” (Derk Richardson, The Absolute Sound). “Melford, Dresser and Wilson know no bounds on their instruments and don’t give a hang about boundaries,” adds JazzTimes reviewer Carlo Wolff, “theirs is improvisation so empathetic, they seem of one mind.”

On Friday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m., veteran jazz guitarist and composer Michael Musillami will celebrate the forthcoming release of his latest record, Mettle (Playscape Recordings), with a free concert at The Hotchkiss School‘s Esther Eastman Music Center in Lakeville, Connecticut.

Musillami, who directs the Hotchkiss Jazz Ensemble (aka Right Brain Logic), will perform with his new septet, the Michael Musillami Trio + 4, an augmented version of his longstanding trio with bassist Joe Fonda and drummer George Schuller that’s celebrating its 10th anniversary as a working unit in 2012. They’ll be joined by special guests Russ Johnson (trumpet), Ned Rothenberg (alto saxophone and clarinet), Jeff Lederer (tenor saxophone and clarinet) and Peter Madsen (piano).

The group will play selections from Mettle, which officially hits the streets on February 7th, as well as other original material specially arranged for this combination of musicians. That includes a new piece called “Of The Brave”, which Right Brain Logic performed at their concert in early December under Musillami’s direction. Saxophonist Charles Tokarz, who also teaches at Hotchkiss, will join Musillami’s group for the composition’s official debut.

“Musillami creates music that ignores category and boundary and moves ahead fearlessly,” writes the Hartford Courant‘s Owen McNally. Critics have called him “exceptional” (Grego Applegate Edwards, Cadence), “engaging” (Jim Macnie, Village Voice), “a modern-day jazz master” (Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal) and “a fine composer of notable original music” (Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic.com).

DownBeat reviewer Lloyd Sachs adds, “Musillami is one of the most accessible thinking-man’s guitarists. Whether he’s waxing lyrical with his richly resonant sound and sculpted lines or charging into the open field with springing and vaulting rhythmic patterns, there is a soulful immediacy to his playing. His mind’s eye is as good as his ear.”

Musillami’s career spans more than 25 years and includes extensive work as a performer, bandleader/composer and educator. In addition to his trio, which has performed across Europe and North America since 2002, he has earned international acclaim as the leader of groups ranging from duo to octet. When not performing or teaching at The Hotchkiss School, he is the manager of Playscape Recordings, the highly regarded independent record label he founded in 1999.

On Sunday, December 4th, Chicago-based clarinetist/composer James Falzone will perform two hometown gigs with his working quartet, KLANG, featuring vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tim Daisy.

The group will premiere a new book of original music it plans to record next year for the follow-up to its latest release, Other Doors (Allos Documents).

At 4:00 p.m., the band will perform at the Old Town School of Folk Music before heading across town to Hungry Brain for a 10:00 p.m. double-bill with drummer Frank Rosaly’s sextet, Cicada Music, which also features Falzone, Adasiewicz and Roebke.

Critics have called KLANG’s music “immensely impressive” (Brian Morton, Point of Departure), “thoughtful and stylish” (Ben Ratliff, New York Times), “adventurous yet accessible” (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and “distinct, challenging and pleasurable” (Mark Holston, Jazziz).

“The level of rapport is extraordinary,” adds Cadence reviewer Stuart Kremsky, “and the malleability of each player’s role in the ensemble provides a broader range of instrumental color than you might expect. Great stuff, with more to discover in the music each time around.”

Falzone, who had a very fruitful year that included the release of two recordings, a Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards nomination for Clarinetist Of The Year and profiles in DownBeat among other publications, will close out 2011 with a December 14th performance at the 914 New Music Festival featuring his other working ensemble, James Falzone’s Allos Musica Trio.
