About Darcy James Argue
Darcy James Argue was one of 2009’s most talked about jazz musicians thanks to the phenomenal critical response to Infernal Machines, his debut recording featuring his 18-piece big band, Secret Society. That response included a series of features in jazz and non-jazz publications alike, multiple nominations at the 2009 Jazz Journalists Association Awards and Infernal Machines‘ presence on more than 70 best-of-the year lists, including Best Debut honors in the prestigious Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll. Adding to the mystique were high profile concerts in New York as well as Germany, The Netherlands and his native Canada, where he conducted an all-star performance of a specially commissioned piece at the National Jazz Awards.
Argue moved to New York in 2003 after earning a Master’s Degree in Boston while studying with legendary composer/arranger Bob Brookmeyer. He has also studied with Lee Hyla, Randall Woolf, Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck. Since the debut of Secret Society in 2005, Argue has become one of the most visible and respected musicians in New York, as well as one of the jazz world’s most prolific and influential bloggers. He is a past winner of awards such as the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop Charlie Parker Composition Prize and the SOCAN/CAJE Phil Nimmons Emerging Composer Award and the recipient of grants from the American Music Center, Meet The Composer, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and the Canada Council for the Arts among others.
