About Firehouse 12 Records

Firehouse 12 Records is the label arm of Firehouse 12, an award-winning bar, state-of-the-art recording studio and unusually intimate music venue located in New Haven, Connecticut’s historic Ninth Square District. Co-founded in 2007 by Firehouse 12′s chief engineer Nick Lloyd and acclaimed cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum, Firehouse 12 Records was created to ambitiously document the creative ethos of some of improvised music’s most innovative practitioners. The label immediately shot to international prominence with a 10-disc set archiving Anthony Braxton’s four-night stand at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club in 2006. Since then, its impact has continued to grow, thanks to the release of a similarly extensive set by trumpeter/composer Bill Dixon and the highly acclaimed debuts of groundbreaking artists such as Peter Evans, Mary Halvorson, and Tyshawn Sorey.

“Firehouse 12 is becoming one of the most interesting and innovative labels this side of the Atlantic,” declares Cadence‘s Marc Medwin. Critics have credited the label with “a forward-thinking model for success in the conglomerated, post-Napster recording industry” (Bill Carbone, New Haven Advocate) and a “fast-developing reputation for left field offerings recorded in luminous sound which handsomely repay in-depth listening” (John Sharpe, AllAboutJazz.com). Its releases have been called “a provocative, cerebral session that rewards serious, dedicated listening” (Forrest Dylan Bryant, JazzTimes), “a magnificent achievement, from players and label alike” (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, 9th Edition) and “a strikingly original work that will surely be considered a major artistic statement for years to come” (Jay Collins, JazzGram).
