About Playscape Recordings
Playscape Recordings is one of the past decade’s most active and respected artist-run labels specializing in jazz and creative improvised music. Founded and managed by guitarist/composer Michael Musillami, this highly regarded independent has released more than 40 distinctive recordings since 1999. Best known for documenting the work of a cadre of esteemed collaborators, including Musillami, Peter Madsen, Mario Pavone and George Schuller, Playscape has also supported the work of younger New York musicians, such as Michaël Attias and Pete Robbins, as well as under-appreciated veterans including Tom Christensen, Armen Donelian, Ted Rosenthal and Bobby Selvaggio.
“Immediately apparent throughout the Playscape catalog is the high quality of musicianship and the bonds that have formed amongst the players,” writes AllAboutJazz-New York‘s Elliott Simon. “With its impressive track record in such a short time and strong commitment to its artists, Playscape’s vision of ‘recording creative music by serious and uncompromising musicians’ has now become reality.” Signal to Noise‘s John Chacona adds, “Like Blue Note or CTI in their prime, Michael Musillami’s Playscape label has a signature sound. Committed, motile and compact, it’s what you get when a close-knit group of like-minded musicians work together for an extended period of time.”
